A major winter storm with blizzard conditions is tracking across the northeastern United States. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 7 AM Tuesday morning.

Snowfall Forecasts

The FOX Forecast Center is paying close attention to the potential for snow in the Northeast this weekend. Throughout the season, moisture and cold air have failed to synchronize, resulting in limited snowfall accumulations at best.. New York City is looking at just a couple inches of the white stuff, while Boston and Washington, D.C., will probably have to settle for a few flakes as well.

Forecasters predict that the higher elevations of the region will experience the heaviest snowfall, with accumulations expected to reach several feet in places like the Catskills and southern Adirondacks of New York state, the Berkshires and Worcester Hills of Massachusetts, the Monadnocks and White Mountains of New Hampshire, and the southern Green Mountains of Vermont. Forecasters expect the precipitation to shift from rain to snow as the elevation increases.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac has predicted a cold winter with above-average snowfall in the New York area. AccuWeather, which issued its own long-range winter forecast in early October, says that we should see a few winter previews this November and December before the real thing arrives in January. Forecasters predict that the first major snowstorm of the year will arrive in January. 4 and last through Jan. 7, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. The Weather Prediction Center has called for heavy snowfall in northern and central Pennsylvania, including the Interstate 81 corridor. This could cause travel delays and road closures in the area.

Temperature Forecasts

The National Weather travel Service says a strong arctic high pressure system was pushing across the northern Rockies, Great Basin and Northern Plains regions on Tuesday, setting the stage for an intense winter storm this week that will cause bitter cold and treacherous weather travel conditions just days before Christmas. The system could also bring snow to the Chicago area, causing significant flight delays and cancellations at O’Hare International Airport.

As it moves through the Northeast, a wintry mix will push temperatures down into the teens and lower 20s and lead to life-threatening driving conditions in many places, according to forecasters. The National Weather Service warns that blowing and drifting snow may create whiteout conditions in some areas. A large number of drivers will be on the roads this weekend, and the agency is urging travelers to take extra precautions and consider alternative transportation if possible.
